Audio Galvanic Isolation And Line Transformers

Definition

Galvanic isolation transfers audio across an electrically insulating barrier so no intended DC conductive path connects the source and receiver signal references. A transformer couples through magnetic flux; an isolated electronic system can convert, isolate power and data, then reconstruct the audio.

What Isolation Solves

Isolation can stop current driven by voltage differences between source and receiver references. It can therefore be the correct architecture for an otherwise unavoidable ground loop. It does not automatically remove noise generated inside the source, receiver, amplifier, power supply, DSP, cable route, or acoustic system.

Transformer Performance Depends On Conditions

PropertyWhat changes it
low-frequency distortionsignal voltage, frequency, core size, material, DC offset and source impedance
frequency responsesource and load impedance, winding inductance, leakage inductance and capacitance
insertion lossturns ratio, winding resistance, source and load
common-mode behaviorinterwinding capacitance, shield, enclosure and grounding
magnetic pickuporientation, shielding and distance from transformers, motors and high-current conductors

Not Every Isolator Is The Same

Low-cost products may have limited core size, level capability, bandwidth, shielding, consistency, or published data. High-performance audio transformers can maintain wide response and low distortion when used within their specified source, load, level, and frequency conditions. Judge the actual device and measurement, not the generic word isolator.

Hidden Conductive Paths

An audio transformer may isolate the signal pair while USB, programming cables, power supplies, connector shells, chassis straps, antenna grounds, display cables, or another audio channel reconnect the references. Verify the complete assembled system.

Selection And Verification

  1. Define required level, lowest frequency, source impedance, load impedance, bandwidth, distortion, phase and common-mode voltage.
  2. Choose a device with published performance under relevant conditions.
  3. Measure insertion loss, response, phase, noise and distortion over level and frequency.
  4. Test the highest low-frequency level separately for saturation.
  5. Check magnetic placement and shielding in the final vehicle.
  6. Verify DC isolation with every power, USB, programming, chassis and accessory connection attached.
  7. Capture startup, shutdown, connect, disconnect and fault behavior.

Safety Boundary

An audio isolation transformer is not automatically rated for mains, high-voltage battery, medical, or safety isolation. Use the specified component and insulation system for the actual voltage and regulatory requirement. Never use isolation to justify removal of protective earth or vehicle safety bonding.
