Measuring SPL (Maximum Output)
Maximum-output SPL testing sounds simple, but the number only means something if the signal, the meter, and the placement stay consistent. This page is the safe quick-reference version.
Tiny Version
Use the same tone, the same placement, and the same weighting every time. If you change the setup, you changed the result.
Fast Test Order
- Choose one repeatable signal: fixed tone, burst, or the organization's official test method.
- Place the meter in the same position every run.
- Confirm weighting and response mode before the run.
- Raise output only while the system stays safe and under control.
- Record the peak and the exact setup used to get it.
Common Standards
- CEA-2010 - burst-based output testing with distortion limits, usually used for controlled product evaluation.
- dB Drag / competition style - in-vehicle measurement with specific placement rules and bandwidth limits.
- Your own before/after testing - totally valid if you keep your setup identical every time.
What Has To Stay The Same
- Meter or microphone placement
- Weighting and response speed
- Signal frequency or burst file
- Vehicle state: doors, windows, seat position, and engine condition if relevant
Common Mistake
Do not compare two SPL numbers from different placement, different weighting, or different tones as if they mean the same thing. The louder-looking number may just be a different test.
