Noise Troubleshooting Card

Use this card to classify the sound first, then touch the right part of the system in a safe order.

If you smell burning, see smoke, blow fuses repeatedly, or find wiring hot enough to hurt your hand, stop testing and fix the power problem before chasing noise.

First Question

Does the sound change with RPM, with volume, or with source selection? That answer usually tells you where to begin.

Branch 1

Alternator Whine

Symptom: a steady tone that rises and falls with engine speed.

  1. Disconnect the RCA pair at the amplifier.
  2. If the noise stops, suspect source-ground or signal-routing trouble first.
  3. If the noise stays, inspect amp power/ground quality and charging noise next.

Most likely fixes: shorten and strengthen grounds, separate signal from power runs, verify alternator and battery condition.

Branch 2

Clicking Or Popping

Symptom: irregular ticks or pops, often changing with engine activity or nearby electronics.

  1. Move RCA and signal cables away from power cable bundles.
  2. If it improves, reroute permanently and add ferrites only if needed.
  3. If it does not improve, inspect ignition noise, poor shielding, and bad cable terminations.

Most likely fixes: reroute cables, repair damaged shields, keep signal wiring out of noisy harness paths.

Branch 3

Constant Hiss

Symptom: steady hiss that does not track RPM.

  1. Turn the source volume to zero.
  2. If hiss drops hard, suspect gain structure first.
  3. If hiss remains, disconnect the RCA at the amp to separate source noise from amp noise.

Most likely fixes: reduce gain, verify source output level, confirm the amp is not the noise floor bottleneck.

Safe Order

  1. Classify the noise by RPM, volume, and source behavior.
  2. Separate source-side noise from amplifier-side noise.
  3. Inspect grounds and cable routing before buying filters.
  4. Only add filters after the wiring path and grounding are known-good.
