Phase Response Graphs
Phase tells you whether parts of the system are arriving together or turning against each other. The graph can look messy, but the real job is to spot smooth rotation versus sudden trouble.
Tiny Version
Smooth lines are usually healthy. Wrapping is normal. Sudden jumps or a messy crossover handoff usually means two parts of the system are not agreeing.
What Is Normal
- Wrapping - the graph jumps from -180 degrees back to +180 degrees. That by itself is normal.
- Smooth slope - usually a healthy minimum-phase system or a predictable filter handoff.
- Expected crossover rotation - each crossover order adds phase shift. Some movement is built in.
What To Worry About
- Sharp local jump - can point to cancellation, polarity problems, or a bad crossover relationship.
- Messy crossover region - often means the two drivers are not summing cleanly.
- Wild shape change with no acoustic reason - can also mean the measurement itself is noisy or gated poorly.
Common Mistake
Do not treat every wrap as a failure. A wrap is just the graph rolling over its display limit. The warning sign is the shape around the handoff, not the fact that the line crossed the page edge.
