Loudspeaker Excursion And Mechanical Limits
Canonical Definition
Excursion is displacement of the moving assembly from rest. A mechanical operating limit is reached when displacement, velocity, acceleration, suspension stress, motor nonlinearity, dynamic offset, clearance, or component strain produces unacceptable distortion, noise, compression, instability, or damage.
Xmax Is Not One Universal Number
Published Xmax may come from voice-coil and gap geometry, a percentage reduction in force factor or compliance, a distortion threshold, or another manufacturer method. State the definition before comparing drivers or setting protection.
| Term | What it can mean |
|---|---|
| Xmax | One-way linear or performance-based excursion under a stated definition. |
| Xmech or mechanical clearance | Physical travel before collision or structural risk; not necessarily low-distortion travel. |
| Measured peak displacement | Actual motion for the stated signal, voltage, enclosure, and temperature. |
| Safe operating limit | Chosen protection boundary with margin for asymmetry, dynamics, tolerance, and unknowns. |
Frequency And Enclosure Control Motion
At low frequency, a driver usually needs more displacement for the same acoustic output. A vented enclosure reduces cone motion near tuning, but below tuning the driver can unload and excursion can rise rapidly. Thermal watt capacity does not prevent this mechanical failure.
Protection Is Frequency-Aware
Broadband voltage limiting treats every frequency alike, while excursion risk is strongly frequency-dependent. Useful protection can include:
- Verified high-pass filtering
- Frequency-dependent limiters or models
- Reduced low-frequency boost
- Enclosure and tuning changes
- More cone area or additional drivers
- Lower maximum voltage in the excursion-limited band
Mechanical Warning Signs
- Rub, buzz, ticking, bottoming, slap, or tinsel-lead noise
- Rapidly increasing distortion or compression
- Asymmetric positive and negative motion
- Dynamic DC offset that consumes one side of the clearance
- Suspension, cone, surround, former, or lead stress before motor Xmax is reached
Verification Workflow
- Record the Xmax definition, enclosure, tuning, crossover, signal, and temperature.
- Begin at low voltage and measure frequency response, distortion, compression, and displacement or a validated model.
- Test above, near, and below the intended passband and vented tuning where applicable.
- Check normal program, test tones, bass-restoration settings, and failure-state content.
- Add protection margin and repeat after heat changes suspension and coil behavior.
Thermal And Mechanical Limits Cross
A subwoofer can be mechanically limited at low frequency and thermally limited higher in its passband. A tweeter can be thermally or mechanically endangered by an incorrect crossover even at modest broadband power. Protection must be based on the driver, enclosure, frequency range, and signal—not only one watt number.
